Expansion plans initiated for the Ohio University Grover Hall necessitated the use of adjacent space occupied by the Varsity Baseball program. The University Athletic Department, in conjunction with baseball fund raising efforts, was interested in achieving a unified sports complex, “Athletic Mall”. A previous master plan failed to achieve a coherent complex and therefore, James Burkart Associates, Inc. developed the new master plan. James Burkart Associates, Inc. was responsible for development of the Phase I baseball and softball complex.
Work included 2,000-seat bleacher and grandstand seating, 1,000 lawn seats, VIP lounge, pressbox, coach’s office, restrooms, concession stand and an elevator to service the two-story structure named after Bob Wren, former coach. The ball fields were each developed with fast draining mixtures, which allow for play during inclement weather typical of Spring in Athens, Ohio. Project completed 1997.
