The Oxbow Corridor was the original path of the flood prone Hocking River prior to the re-routing and levee work by the Army Corp. of Engineers. James Burkart Associates, Inc. identified this resultant open space as a prime site for an arboretum in their 1978 West Green/Arboretum Environmental Design Handbook. Twenty years later, the first phase of development began with the construction of the Kennard Gateway to Emeriti Arboretum, which includes a pond, entrance gate, overlook walls, and arboretum paths. Construction drawings were completed by James Burkart Associates, Inc.
