About the Project: Youngstown State University
Covering a period of 15 years, James Burkart Associates, Inc. was instrumental in the conversion and growth of this urban university bisected with streets and concealed with parking lots into a pedestrian friendly campus mall. The main enclave of campus buildings, known as the "Central Core", was developed into student and facility oriented space linkiing the classrooms, dormitory and student union with flowing walkways, while placing emphasis on green space and a plentiful supply of landscape materials. The intense planting scheme provides a respite from urban life and also functions well with campus science studies. In conjunction with the "Central Core", numerous projects including parking lots, plazas, site graphics, recreational fields and an extensive campus-wide irrigation system were developed. The campus has won several awards for its landscaping and has been featured in several landscape maintenance periodicals.
