About the Project: The project began with the analysis of an existing large courtyard plaza space on the north side of the twelve story Midland office building in central Downtown Columbus. The previous outdoor space was predominantly paved in concrete with limited greenspace and no provisions for disabled persons. The space was poorly attended and became a detriment to leasing efforts. James Burkart Associates, Inc. was commissioned by the building manager to design a "people space" for the enjoyment of the building tenants. Our scheme involved eliminating the hardscape in the northern half of the site and turning it into a green lawn. The balance of the site included a dining area among a bosque of flowering trees and an adjacent water feature. A handicap ramp and numerous flower beds were added to complete the project.
